Pope Leo XIV in Africa: Focus on Faith, Not Politics
April 18, 2026
On his flight to Luanda, Angola, Pope Leo XIV took the opportunity to address journalists who have been accompanying him on his Apostolic Journey. He expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received in Cameroon and emphasized that the purpose of his visit is to foster faith among Catholics in Africa, not to engage in political debates.
As he continues the third leg of his journey, Pope Leo XIV clarified that his prepared speeches were written weeks in advance, distancing himself from any interpretation that they are meant to be construed as a dialogue with U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated unequivocally that engaging in political discourse with the president is not among his priorities during this important pastoral visit.
Throughout his journey in Africa, Pope Leo XIV has been engaging with leaders and citizens in Algeria, Cameroon, and now Angola, with a focus on promoting peace and encouraging the local Catholic communities. His mission has been characterized by a deep commitment to addressing social issues and fostering unity among nations.
The Pope’s Africa tour has also highlighted his understanding of the continent’s unique challenges, derived from his extensive experiences in Kenya, Tanzania, and Nigeria before his papacy. His approach remains pastoral rather than political, aimed at strengthening the bonds of faith and hope.
Following his stay in Angola, Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Equatorial Guinea, marking the final stop on his current Apostolic Journey. Here, he will continue his outreach and support for the Catholic Church’s efforts in the region.
