Pope Leo XIV Celebrates Mother's Day and Coptic Friendship

Pope Leo XIV sent heartfelt greetings to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II on the occasion of the annual “Day of Coptic-Catholic Friendship.” In his message, the Pope expressed, “I extend a fraternal greeting to His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and assure my prayers for the entire beloved Coptic Church, in the hope that our journey of friendship may lead us to perfect unity in Christ, who has called us ‘friends.'” This statement underscored the importance of ecumenical relations and the desire for collaboration among Christian denominations.

Moreover, as Mother’s Day was celebrated in over 40 countries on the second Sunday of May, Pope Leo XIV dedicated his thoughts specifically to mothers worldwide. He reflected on the challenges faced by many, especially in difficult circumstances, saying, “Through the intercession of Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother, let us pray with affection and gratitude for every mother, especially for those living in the most difficult conditions.” His message served as a reminder of the central role that mothers play in families and communities.

Additionally, Pope Leo XIV acknowledged the welcoming spirit of the citizens of the Canary Islands, particularly highlighting their kindness toward passengers from the “Hondius Cruise Ship,” which had hantavirus patients on board. In his expression of gratitude, he stated, “I am happy to be able to meet you next month during my visit to the islands.”

The Pope is scheduled to undertake an apostolic journey to Spain from June 6 to 12. During this trip, he will spend the final two days visiting Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where he is expected to engage with migrants and organizations dedicated to their assistance. This journey reflects the Pope's ongoing commitment to promoting awareness and action on behalf of vulnerable populations.
