Pope Leo XIV renewed his calls for an end to violence in Ukraine during his Angelus address on Sunday, expressing deep concern over the recent surge in attacks that have struck various cities and civilian infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of innocent people.
The Pope stated that he has been following, “with a heavy heart,” the reports of intensified assaults on Ukrainian urban centers. Throughout the summer, Russia has increased its strikes on Ukraine, with multiple recent air attacks targeting civilian areas as the Ukrainian air defense capabilities dwindle, particularly the Western-supplied Patriot systems.
In the past few days, numerous civilians have died as a result of Russian missile and drone strikes, despite Russia's claims that its assaults are aimed at military sites. The consequences of these attacks have been devastating, with apartment buildings, private homes, and public transport infrastructure in major population centers reduced to rubble.
“My heart goes out to the suffering of the people, who have been living in distress and fear for years,” Pope Leo said, emphasizing his sorrow for those enduring prolonged hardship.
He reiterated his appeal “to end the violence and halt the destruction, and to open hearts to dialogue and peace.” The Holy Father expressed a hopeful wish that diplomatic efforts made recently could yield tangible results, leading to negotiations and enhanced diplomacy.
The Pope's encouragement for peace comes as US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner travelled to Russia for talks on Saturday and are set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday.
In closing his remarks, Pope Leo XIV called for prayers “that harmony may prevail in all the conflicts of the world,” underlining the importance of global reconciliation and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
