Pope Leo XIV observed the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks during his address following the Angelus prayer on Sunday. Speaking in English, he reflected on the tragic day when almost 3,000 individuals lost their lives in coordinated terrorist attacks across New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.
“Two days ago marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States of America,” Pope Leo XIV remarked, adding that many have since suffered as a result of 9/11-related illnesses. He offered prayers for all who perished and for those still affected by the scars of that fateful day.
The Pope underscored the importance of global peace, especially in light of ongoing conflicts. “At a time when conflict and violence afflict so many of our brothers and sisters, I invite everyone to pray that the Lord will bestow his gift of peace upon the world,” he stated. He further emphasized that the remembrance of such a tragic event drives us to “renew our commitment to peace, first and foremost with prayer, that we entrust to the intercession of the Virgin Mary.”
Switching to Italian, Pope Leo XIV continued to stress the significance of peace and the collective responsibility to seek it fervently. The Pope’s poignant comments prompted a renewed focus on the quest for harmony, echoing across communities affected by strife. His call for prayers highlights the role of faith in navigating the complex challenges faced globally today.
