On the morning of August 24, Pope Leo XIV met with members of the Marsodeto Federation, a Spanish NGO dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy. The meeting took place in the Vatican as the organization marked 45 years of its mission, having traveled from Toledo to Rome for this pilgrimage.
In his address, the Pope acknowledged the challenging nature of the Federation's work, describing it as “undoubtedly an arduous task” filled with much hidden labor that is recognized only by God. He emphasized the gratifying aspect of their mission, where “in the face of each person, Jesus Christ Himself” can be found.
The Pope highlighted the Biblical teaching that individuals serve as witnesses to the Gospel message, quoting from Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” He conveyed that recognizing Christ in the lives of the most vulnerable is crucial for fostering growth as a human and Christian society.
Founded by Fr. Marcelino Casas Puente over 40 years ago, the Marsodeto Federation operates with core values of solidarity, human dignity, and full inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities and cerebral palsy. The organization now supports more than 2,600 individuals, ensuring that no family faces abandonment in their struggles.
Pope Leo XIV's message reiterated sentiments he expressed during his visit to Spain in June, reflecting on the love that compels action among believers. He concluded his remarks by entrusting the Federation's ongoing efforts to the protection of Mary, encouraging the members to keep their focus on Christ amid the challenges they face. "May she encourage you in moments of greatest difficulty and help you always to keep your gaze fixed on the Lord," he stated, blessing the group's mission to serve as a beacon for both the Church and society.
