Pope Leo XIV releases his prayer intention for the month of August, inviting Catholics worldwide to join him in praying for evangelization in urban areas. This call came in a video prepared by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network.
In his prayer, the Pope addressed the “Good Shepherd,” asking Him to “walk through our streets and squares,” and to “enter tall buildings and humble neighborhoods.” He highlighted the pressing need for the Lord’s presence to “silently accompany millions” of individuals who “seek meaning amid noise and haste.”
Pope Leo acknowledged that while cities can foster “freedom and opportunity,” they often transform into “spaces of anonymity and isolation.” He expressed a desire for these urban settings to become “fertile ground” for the proclamation of the Gospel. Urging the faithful, he emphasized the importance of “simple and loving gestures” performed within communities as a way to fight against indifference and isolation.
Almost 45% of the world’s population lives in urban areas. This demographic shift has led to greater population density, presenting social and community challenges, including loneliness, particularly impacting the mental health of the youth. The Pope’s prayer aim addresses these challenges, focusing on the need for connection and fraternity within city life.
The Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, the organization behind the monthly prayer intention, was founded in 1844 as the Apostleship of Prayer and is a Pontifical Work entrusted to the Society of Jesus. In December 2020, Pope Francis established this network as a Vatican Foundation, with its statutes approved in July 2024. It operates in over 92 countries and includes a spiritual community of over 22 million individuals dedicated to living out God’s mission each day. Central to this community's mission is the monthly prayer intent crafted by the Pope, emphasizing the urgent challenges facing humanity and the Church.
