Pope Leo XIV urged Catholic communicators gathered at the SIGNIS World Conference in Kigali, Rwanda, to promote digital communication rooted in truth, human dignity, peace, and care for creation. His appeal was articulated in a message signed on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
In his message, the Pope extended cordial greetings to the participants and expressed his spiritual closeness. He shared his hope that their discussions would give “new impetus” to efforts ensuring that communication platforms advance the common good of humanity.
Reflecting on the impact of the digital age, the message noted that contemporary life is increasingly influenced by digital technology and the internet. Quoting his Encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas,” Pope Leo underscored that online communication serves not just as a means of transmitting information, but also actively shapes culture and influences how people perceive the world.
In light of this context, the Holy Father encouraged conference participants to explore practical avenues for advancing the theme, “Digital Communication for Cultural Harmony and Environmental Wellbeing.” He expressed hope that their reflections would lead to communication strategies and tools committed to truth and respectful of every individual’s dignity.
Such an approach, the Pope emphasized, could contribute to building a culture that reflects Gospel values of communion and peace, while also promoting responsible environmental stewardship. He entrusted all attendees to the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and assured them of his prayers that their work might yield lasting results. To conclude, he imparted his Apostolic Blessing as a token of “wisdom and strength in the Lord.”
