Pope Leo XIV expressed his condolences for the passing of Cardinal Paolo Romeo, Archbishop Emeritus of Palermo, who died at the age of 88 on Sunday. In a telegram addressed to Bishop Antonino Raspanti of Acireale, the Pope reflected on the late Cardinal's generous service to the Gospel and the Church.
Cardinal Paolo Romeo passed away on Sunday morning at San Marco Hospital in Catania, after a prolonged illness. Born in Acireale, he was made a Cardinal in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI and led the Archdiocese of Palermo from 2006 until 2015.
Pope Leo XIV remembered Cardinal Romeo with affection, stating, “with affection this dear brother who generously served the Gospel and the Church.” His message conveyed heartfelt sympathy to all the faithful and family members mourning the Cardinal's departure. Furthermore, the Pope emphasized Cardinal Romeo's dedicated ministry, which began as a priest in the Diocese of Acireale and included significant roles in the diplomatic service of the Holy See, serving as pontifical representative in Haiti, Colombia, Canada, Italy, and the Republic of San Marino.
The Pope also offered fervent prayers for Cardinal Romeo, asking the Lord to welcome him into His peace. The funeral for Cardinal Romeo is scheduled for Wednesday morning in the Cathedral Basilica of Acireale.
