Pope Leo XIV conveyed his deep sorrow following the earthquake that struck several parts of Colombia on August 10, which resulted in the deaths of more than 150 individuals and left many others injured. These sentiments were shared in a telegram addressed to Archbishop Francisco Javier Múnera Correa of Cartagena, who serves as the president of the Colombian Bishops’ Conference.
In the message, Pope Leo articulated his prayers “for the eternal rest of those who died” and for the swift recovery of all those impacted by the disaster. The earthquake, which primarily affected the southwestern region of the country, also caused extensive damage, including to various churches.
Pope Leo expressed heartfelt condolences to the families who, “in this hour of profound sorrow, mourn the loss of their loved ones.” He acknowledged the heroic efforts of those assisting in search-and-rescue operations, extending gratitude to all working “with generous dedication” to provide relief and help to the affected population. Additionally, he assured these individuals of his spiritual closeness during this difficult time.
In his message, the Pope ultimately implored the Lord to, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, “pour out upon the beloved Colombian people the gifts of spiritual strength and Christian hope,” and he imparted his heartfelt Apostolic Blessing.
