Pope Leo XIV prayed for peace to prevail in all hearts during his Regina Caeli address on Sunday, as the Church marked the beginning of Laudato Si’ Week, which runs from May 17 to 24.
This annual observance celebrates the anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical, focusing on the imperative of caring for our common home. In his remarks, Pope Leo XIV urged members of the Laudato Si’ Movement and others engaged in integral ecology to renew their dedication to these principles.
The Pope drew inspiration from St. Francis of Assisi, referencing his love for all creatures and his enduring message of peace, particularly noteworthy as the Church observes 800 years since the saint's death. “In this Jubilee Year of Saint Francis of Assisi, let us remember his message of peace with God, with our brothers and sisters, and with all creatures,” he stated.
He also voiced concerns about the detrimental impact of wars, which he noted had significantly hindered progress in environmental care. Pope Leo XIV highlighted the intrinsic connection between peace and life, stating, “Care for peace is care for life.” His appeal resonates with the ongoing global call for ecological activism and a commitment to sustainable practices.
