On Monday morning, July 20, Pope Leo XIV made a private visit to the Abbey of Montecassino, engaging with its monastic community during his stay. Notably, the abbey holds historical significance as the first monastery of the Benedictine order, founded by Saint Benedict of Norcia in 529.
During his visit, Pope Leo XIV paused to pray at the tomb of Saint Benedict, entrusting his plea for peace to the saint, especially for regions of the world currently afflicted by bloodshed and conflict. According to a press statement from the Holy See Press Office, the Pope’s prayer underscored his concern for areas enduring violence and turmoil.
After his poignant prayers, the Pope shared lunch with the religious community at the abbey. This visit highlights Montecassino's historical and spiritual relevance, which was profoundly affected by the Battle of Monte Cassino in February 1944, during which the abbey was nearly destroyed by Allied forces.
Following the visit, Pope Leo XIV returned to Castel Gandolfo, where he is spending his summer break until July 27.
