Pope Leo XIV expressed his solidarity with those affected by the devastating wildfires sweeping parts of France and Spain and called for prayers for the victims and the emergency responders assisting in relief efforts.
During the Sunday Angelus in Castel Gandolfo, he acknowledged the chaos caused by these wildfires, which have led to mass evacuations in southwestern France and central Spain. He noted that these blazes are exacerbated by extreme heat, strong winds, and prolonged drought. In his address, the Pope remarked, "In light of the devastating wildfires that have affected various parts of France and Spain in recent days, I wish to express my closeness and invite everyone to pray for those who have been affected and for the tireless efforts of the emergency responders."
As the fires continued to rage, displacing hundreds of thousands, the Pope highlighted the critical work of firefighters battling the flames. His entreaty for prayer and support underlined the humanitarian impact of these disasters on communities in the affected regions.
In addition to addressing the wildfires, Pope Leo XIV also brought attention to the celebration of the Sixth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, observed on July 26. He evoked the theme of the day, taken from the Prophet Isaiah: "I will never forget you" (Is 49:15). The Pope urged the faithful to give thanks for the contributions of older individuals to both the Church and society. He encouraged respect and care for the elderly and emphasized their essential role in family and community life, stating, "Together, let us give thanks to the Lord for the gift that older people are to the Church and to society." He concluded by reinforcing the importance of ensuring that grandparents and the elderly receive the care, attention, and assistance they deserve.
