Pope Leo XIV will convene with members of the College of Cardinals on June 26-27 for an Extraordinary Consistory focused on the current situation of the Church and the world, the pursuit of peace, and the implementation of the Synod. This meeting follows the earlier Consistory held in January, which included 170 Cardinal electors and non-electors from various regions.
The agenda for the Extraordinary Consistory, as outlined by the Holy See Press Office, emphasizes reflection and discussion on global conflicts and how the Church can effectively communicate values of peace and reconciliation. Upon announcing the forthcoming meeting, Pope Leo XIV expressed the necessity of relying on the Cardinals, indicating a collaborative approach to navigating these pressing issues.
The sessions will follow a “synodal” structure that incorporates prayer, personal reflection, group discussions, and plenary sessions. The Cardinals will be divided into 20 groups, consisting of a mix of Cardinal electors, including Ordinaries, Apostolic Nuncios, and those who have completed their service as Ordinaries. Each group will be overseen by a president and a secretary tasked with moderating discussions and compiling reports.
The first session will begin on Friday, June 26, with a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, led by Pope Leo XIV. This will be succeeded by an opening session in the Paul VI Hall, highlighted by the singing of the Veni Creator Spiritus and an introductory address by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals. The initial discussion will explore the question: “In what kind of world are we called to proclaim the Gospel?” introduced by Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, Metropolitan Archbishop of Krakow.
The second session will reflect on the theme “The culture of power and the civilization of love,” while the third session will focus on “Building the good: the worksites of our time.” In this session, Cardinal Stephen Brislin, Metropolitan Archbishop of Johannesburg, will guide discussions aimed at addressing challenges to the common good and supporting local churches. Lastly, the fourth and concluding session will address “The path of implementing the Synod,” introduced by Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod.
Pope Leo XIV’s concluding address will mark the end of the Consistory, followed by the singing of the Te Deum and a dinner with the Cardinals.
Looking ahead, on Monday, June 29, Pope Leo XIV will preside over Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica for the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.
