Pope Leo XIV commenced a six-day visit to Madrid, Spain, today, where he engaged in several significant events, including a visit to the Royal Palace of Madrid and a prayer vigil with young people at Plaza de Lima.
During his time in the Spanish capital, the Pope visited the Royal Palace of Madrid, a historic site that serves as the official residence of the Spanish royal family. This visit underscored the ongoing relationship between the Vatican and the Spanish monarchy, particularly with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia present.
The Pope appealed to all gathered, urging them to “set aside the divisive and polarizing narratives of your societal reality and history, so as to overcome sterile simplifications through the fruitful appreciation of complexity.” He emphasized the importance of recognizing the dignity in every person.
Additionally, Pope Leo XIV explored the Caritas social project, Cedia 24 Horas, hosted by the Diocese of Madrid. This initiative aims to support and assist vulnerable populations, reflecting the Pope's commitment to social issues and humanitarian efforts. He reminded attendees that “anyone who is in Madrid is from Madrid,” reinforcing the message of inclusivity.
The Pope's day culminated in a prayer vigil at Plaza de Lima, which gathered more than half a million young people who shared in a moment of reflection and spiritual solidarity. Here, he challenged the youth to “never be afraid to consider a vocation to the priesthood, to religious life, or to other forms of service in the Church.” Such engagement with the youth aligns with the Pope's dedication to inspiring the next generation of Catholics.
