On Monday morning at the Apostolic Palace, Pope Leo XIV welcomed His Excellency Mr. Lee Jae-myung, the President of the Republic of Korea. This meeting was followed by an audience with Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.
During their discussions, Pope Leo XIV and President Lee addressed the strong diplomatic relationship that has existed between the Holy See and South Korea for the past 63 years, established in 1963. The historical context of this relationship was further illustrated by notable visits from previous Popes, including Pope St. John Paul II’s trips to South Korea in 1984 and 1989, and Pope Francis’s visit in 2014, which coincided with the 6th Asian Youth Day.
The conversations also highlighted the significant contributions made by the local Catholic Church to South Korean society, particularly in the fields of education and social welfare, as noted in statements from the Holy See Press Office.
Additionally, they discussed the upcoming World Youth Day scheduled for 2027 and various aspects of the regional and international situation, reflecting their ongoing commitment to dialogue and collaboration between the two parties.
