Pope Leo XIV presided over the funeral Mass for Cardinal Camillo Ruini at St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday afternoon. This solemn occasion marked a significant moment for the Catholic community, honoring a key figure who passed away on June 16 at the age of 95.
In his funeral homily, Pope Leo described Cardinal Ruini as a “wise and diligent shepherd” who served the Church with unwavering dedication. He recalled Ruini’s immense contributions, emphasizing how the cardinal guided both the People of God and his fellow bishops during critical moments.
During the Mass, the Pope expressed gratitude for the insights and initiatives Ruini undertook throughout his ministry. He highlighted Cardinal Ruini’s roles as Vicar General of the Diocese of Rome and Archpriest of the Basilica of St. John Lateran, as well as his term as President of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
Cardinal Ruini’s coffin, which rested on a carpet in front of the altar, was adorned with the open Book of the Gospels—a testament to the life he devoted to the Word of God.
Pope Leo reflected on the readings chosen for the day’s liturgy, noting how they encapsulated Cardinal Ruini’s fidelity to Christ and the Church. He pointed out that the readings reminded the congregation of the enduring love of God and the mission of service that defined the late cardinal's life.
In closing, Pope Leo prayed for God to grant Cardinal Ruini “the reward of His peace that knows no end,” and expressed gratitude to those who supported the cardinal throughout his life and in his final years.
