Pope Leo XIV addressed representatives of Muslim communities in Senegal, advocating for interreligious cooperation towards peace and warning against the misuse of God's name for military, economic, or political ends. This encounter occurred amid a gathering that included members of the Catholic Church in Senegal.
In his remarks, the Pope emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in condemning discrimination and persecution based on race, religion, or origin. He stated, "We together assume our common responsibility: to condemn every form of discrimination and persecution founded on race, religion, or origin; to reject every instrumentalization of the name of God for military, economic, or political gain; to raise our voice in favor of every minority that suffers."
Pope Leo XIV labeled the meeting an important symbol of friendship, addressing the need for an inclusive and fraternal society, particularly noting Senegal's reputation for hospitality and solidarity that serves as a model for peaceful coexistence among diverse faiths. He remarked that this reality forms the basis for dialogue among communities differing by religion and ethnicity, and he regarded the "treasure of fraternity" as essential not only for Senegal but also for humanity at large.
Despite these positive reflections, the Pope expressed concerns about ongoing violence on the African continent, citing armed conflicts that lead to humanitarian crises and heightened inequalities. He noted that such conflicts are compounded by the rise in violent extremism, growing migration issues, divisive rhetoric, weakening family structures, and the erosion of ethical values, particularly affecting youth.
In light of these challenges, the Pope asserted that the principles of interreligious dialogue and the Senegalese spirit of "teranga"—a term representing hospitality and community—are vital for fostering peace. He called for a collaborative effort among religious leaders to engage in mediation and reconciliation, thus transforming moral forces into instruments to alleviate tensions and cultivate mutual respect.
Pope Leo XIV reiterated the urgent need for diplomacy and religious dialogue grounded in truth and justice. He proclaimed, "Together, we, Christians and Muslims, believe that every human being is shaped by the hands of God... clothed with a dignity that no law nor any human power has the right to confiscate." He noted that, on this foundation of fraternity, it is necessary for religions to jointly renounce any misuse of God’s name and to defend those who suffer from persecution.
As he concluded, the Pope offered prayers for a renewed commitment to understanding, listening, and living together in respect and fraternity. He hoped that their concerted efforts in favor of peace and justice would yield plentiful results and further collaboration among diverse communities.
