Pope Leo XIV Sends Message for Turin International Book Fair

Pope Leo XIV sent a message to the Turin International Book Fair, taking place in the northern Italian city from May 14 to 18. In his message, he reiterated the vital role of literature in promoting human dignity, peace, and fraternity, particularly for the vulnerable. He highlighted that children, amid 'the horror of war' and 'chill of indifference,' embody hope for the future.

Transmitted on the Holy Father's behalf by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the message was delivered to the Archbishop of Turin, Cardinal Roberto Repole, and addressed to participants at the international fair. It was read during the opening ceremony on Thursday morning by the fair’s director.

The Pope described the theme of this year's fair, inspired by Elsa Morante's 'The World Saved by Kids,' as "significant and timely." He noted that in a world often overwhelmed by conflict, children’s ability to perceive the world with fresh eyes ignites a beacon of hope in society.

Pope Leo concluded by expressing his hope that the event would inspire a renewed awareness of culture’s importance in fostering dialogue and harmony.

His statements echoed earlier remarks made to representatives of the Vatican Publishing House, which is also participating in the Turin event, as it celebrates its centenary. On that occasion, the Holy Father emphasized that reading nourishes the mind, cultivates a well-formed critical sense, and helps guard against extremism and narrow-mindedness.
