Pope Leo XIV visited the Vatican's Estate Ragazzi summer camp on Monday, engaging with children and young people participating in this year’s programme, which revolved around the theme of Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days." During the visit, he addressed numerous questions from the attendees.
One key topic discussed was the challenge of stepping away from screens during the school year. The Pope acknowledged the positive aspects of technology but emphasized its limitations in fostering genuine human connections. He stated, "Technology can be very good and very useful for many things. However, when we are together, it is not necessary to have a mobile phone, smartphone, or tablet in our hands at every moment." He encouraged the children to cherish their time with one another, underscoring the importance of personal interaction.
Pope Leo XIV elaborated on the need for families to engage in meaningful conversations. He pointed out that merely sitting together while each person focuses on their own mobile device is not sufficient. He highlighted, "It is very important to learn how to talk, to have conversations, and to enjoy one another's company." Moreover, he reminded the children about the significance of prayer, noting that while the Bible and prayers can be accessed digitally, God seeks a connection with individuals' hearts and lives, not their devices.
Addressing the older participants, the Pope raised awareness about the design of many applications aimed at keeping users engaged for extended periods. He cautioned, "They try to make us dependent on this technology," and recommended setting practical limits on screen time to include more family interactions. "We are not all plugged into a cable," he remarked, stressing the importance of human connection.
Reflecting on his experiences from his travels around the world, Pope Leo XIV recounted instances where reliance on GPS navigation led him astray in various countries. He shared, "In Italy, in other European countries, in Peru, and once even in the United States, I followed the GPS, and it took me down the wrong road." He encouraged the children to think independently and develop their abilities instead of relying solely on technology for direction in life. He remarked, "I do not need my phone if my brain is working," pointing out that preparation and critical thinking are essential for overcoming challenges.
The encounter concluded with Pope Leo XIV being named "Chief Explorer" of the summer camp, receiving an explorer's kit and a commemorative plaque. He invited the children to join him in prayer and encouraged them to share with their parents that they had prayed together. He remarked on the significance of prayer, stating, "Prayer is very important for us. We want Jesus to be here with us."
