Pope Leo XIV addressed the Church in Asia through a letter to Cardinal Oswald Gracias, his Special Envoy to the 12th Plenary Assembly of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC), which will be held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 20 to 26 July 2026.
In the letter, the Pope urged the region's church leaders to place God at the forefront of their actions and focus on the human person in their decisions. He called for courage in engaging with society, advising them not to fear "getting their hands dirty at the building site of our time." His message reflected a desire for the faithful to actively engage in social issues.
"Be builders of communion, not architects of Babel; servants of the Kingdom that is coming, not masters of towers destined to collapse," the Pope wrote, reiterating themes expressed in his earlier document, Magnifica Humanitas. He emphasized a deep sense of communal responsibility and the need for collective action to foster an inclusive society.
Moreover, Pope Leo XIV underscored the importance of marginalized groups within the Church's mission. Citing Psalm 85, he referred to the rejected stones—the poor, the sick, migrants, and the little ones—as the "cornerstone" of the community. He envisioned a future where these previously overlooked groups become central to building a welcoming and just society. The Pope stated that through their shared commitment, the ecclesial community could create a strong and inclusive environment where love, truth, justice, and peace flourish.
In the letter, signed on 24 June, the Pope recalled that the request for a papal envoy was initiated by Cardinal Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Goa and Damão. He concluded by placing his representative under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph.
