Pope Leo XIV welcomed representatives of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal to the Vatican on Saturday, marking his first meeting with the movement since the start of his pontificate. During this gathering, he engaged with members of communities, prayer groups, and evangelization schools from around the globe, as well as leaders of CHARIS, the international service body of the Renewal. The Pope emphasized the movement's spiritual vitality as one of the gifts that God has endowed upon the Church.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal, founded in the late 1960s, now includes numerous prayer groups, communities, and evangelization efforts worldwide. It concentrates on the action of the Holy Spirit within believers’ lives through prayer, worship, Sacred Scripture, and missionary outreach. Since 2019, the various facets of the Renewal have unified under CHARIS, established by Pope Francis to promote communion and service among its members.
Reflecting on the growth of the movement following the Second Vatican Council, Pope Leo acknowledged the recognition given by his predecessors. He recalled how Saint Paul VI regarded the Renewal as a response to the increasing secularization of society, while Pope Saint John Paul II acknowledged its missionary fervor and Pope Benedict XVI praised its focus on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Additionally, he mentioned Pope Francis' characterization of the Renewal as a 'flood of grace' meant for the entire Church.
Pope Leo expressed a desire to deepen the relationship between the See of Peter and the global Catholic Charismatic Renewal by elaborating on five key aspects of its spiritual experience: baptism in the Spirit, prayer of praise, the Word of God, communion, and charity. He stated that the shared faith journey within the Renewal originates from the 'personal experience of the Holy Spirit,' which allows the grace of Baptism to manifest in believers’ lives and leads to a profound understanding of God's love.
In regard to prayer, the Pope addressed the role of praise and worship within the Charismatic tradition. He noted that the experience of the Holy Spirit generates a more genuine and spontaneous dialogue with God, fostering thanksgiving and adoration. He pointed out that the Renewal has facilitated many in rediscovering these essential elements of prayer, restoring them to the center of Christian existence.
Pope Leo also underscored the significance of the Word of God in the life of the Renewal, stating that the same Spirit who inspired Sacred Scripture continues to vivify it within the Church today. He remarked, 'Scripture has therefore become for you a wonderful source of spiritual nourishment that enlightens and comforts,' adding that it offers guidance for daily decision-making and enhances communal prayer.
Addressing the idea of unity, the Pope emphasized that 'the Holy Spirit is the wellspring of communion,' reflecting on the traditional prayer to the Holy Spirit for Christian unity. He noted that the Renewal's members have a particular insight into the Spirit's role in fostering harmony within the Church and promoting relationships with Christians of other denominations. The Holy Spirit, he explained, cultivates unity among the various charisms and communities of the Renewal while fortifying connections throughout the greater Christian community.
Concluding his reflections, the Pope focused on charity, describing it as one of the clearest manifestations of a life led by the Spirit. He said, 'The renewed presence of the Spirit has awakened in you a new capacity to love,' which extends towards both God and neighbor, especially the marginalized. He commended the numerous charitable endeavors that have arisen from the Renewal, urging members to remain vigilant in their concern for the poor and vulnerable. 'I invite you, then, to keep alive this love for the poor, which reveals the true face of God,' he encouraged.
As he ended his address, the Pope urged members of the Renewal to commit to their mission within the Church. 'Put yourselves at the service of your dioceses and parishes,' he advised, admonishing them to resist any inclinations towards self-promotion or the quest for personal power and prestige. Pope Leo concluded his remarks with a prayer that the Spirit would perpetually serve as 'a light and a source of strength' on both their individual and collective journeys.
