Pope Leo XIV received employees of the Italian Bishops' Conference (CEI) on May 2, emphasizing the need for service, belonging, and mission during an audience attended by around 800 individuals alongside their families. Present at the event were Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the President of the CEI, and Archbishop Giuseppe Baturi, the Secretary General.
During his address, the Pope expressed gratitude for the daily efforts of the employees, highlighting the importance of their commitment and the necessity of working with care and dedication. He stated that even simple actions carry significant meaning in the life of the Church, asserting, “nothing is small if done with faith, love, and this spirit of communion.”
Further delving into the role of the bishops’ offices, Pope Leo noted that these are not just structures but vital instruments that foster communion among Churches in Italy. He characterized their work as a “service to service,” a collaboration that enables local Churches to proclaim the Good News and maintain a living presence of the Lord throughout Italy and the world.
The Pope emphasized that at the heart of this service lies a relationship with the Lord. He remarked that serving in the Church transcends mere function, urging attendees to actively participate in the Church's life as members of a body led by Christ. He encouraged a sense of belonging, stating that “the Bride of Christ cannot be served as spectators, but only with the love of those who know they belong to her, in a bond of faith and communion that is first and foremost a gift of grace.”
As the conversation shifted towards the theme of mission, Pope Leo XIV described it as crucial, especially during times of transformation. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the “profound changes” affecting families, schools, workplaces, and social participation in Italy. He reiterated the Church's purpose to proclaim Christ and foster relationships, urging a spirit of welcome to those in need and emphasizing the importance of generosity in sharing the Gospel.
In closing his remarks, Pope Leo XIV entrusted the future work of the Italian Bishops’ Conference and local Churches to the patronage of Saints Francis of Assisi and Catherine of Siena, highlighting their enduring significance in guiding the faithful.
