As Pope Leo XIV prepares for his visit to Lampedusa, his commitment to addressing the plight of migrants takes center stage. Amaya Valcárcel, an advocate with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), emphasizes the Pope's concern for vulnerable populations, particularly highlighting often-overlooked crises in regions like Myanmar and Sudan. Valcárcel calls for a global response that prioritizes human dignity and solidarity, mirroring the Pope’s consistent messaging.
Pope Leo's upcoming visit to Lampedusa continues the legacy of Pope Francis, whose inaugural apostolic trip in 2013 transformed the small Mediterranean island into a global symbol of compassion towards migrants and refugees. During that historic visit, Pope Francis condemned the “globalization of indifference” and raised the crucial question: “Where is your brother?” Valcárcel notes that Pope Leo carries this same mission, further enhancing his pastoral outreach and advocacy for the displaced.
Valcárcel points out that Pope Leo has demonstrated a commitment to issues faced by those fleeing violence and persecution, particularly invoking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. During his Angelus address, he remarked on the importance of this international agreement, which aims to protect the rights of refugees and emphasized the pressing need for world leaders to recall its founding principles.
In supporting displaced individuals, the Pope adheres to the four verbs established by Pope Francis: welcome, protect, promote, and integrate. Valcárcel urges that migration should not merely be seen as a phenomenon but rather as a collection of lived experiences and personal histories. She underscores that the Pope’s message calls for societal responsibility in preventing migrant fatalities at borders and advocating for empathy towards those suffering.
Valcárcel also highlights Pope Leo XIV’s focus on global peace and its impact on forced displacement, noting his prayers for often-forgotten areas such as Myanmar and Sudan. She believes that acknowledging these overlooked crises is vital for addressing the root causes of migration and creating effective migration policies. While JRS teams do not directly operate in Lampedusa, they provide essential support in nearby Sicily, aiding many individuals who arrive on the island.
According to Valcárcel, policies surrounding migration must align with international refugee laws. She expresses concern about trends toward increased border restrictions and deportation practices that threaten the principle of non-refoulement. Valcárcel emphasizes that understanding the causes behind migration is crucial, and policies must respect the dignity of each individual.
The Pope has articulated criticism of blanket immigration policies that neglect individual circumstances, advocating for an integrative approach that fosters mutual respect between migrants and host communities. Valcárcel notes that the integration process should allow migrants to learn about their new environment while still embracing their original identities.
By reinstating the importance of human dignity in discussions surrounding migration, Pope Leo expresses hope that the personal experiences of refugees can foster greater understanding and challenge existing stereotypes.
