On July 12, 2026, after praying the Angelus in Piazza della Libertà in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV addressed the dire situation arising from renewed conflicts across the globe, particularly in the Middle East and Ukraine. He called for a return to diplomatic efforts to resolve such tensions.
Reflecting on the ongoing violence, the Pope mentioned the Middle East and the recent escalation in hostilities following the collapse of hopes for a U.S.-Iran agreement. He expressed his concerns regarding the humanitarian impact in conflict zones, notably highlighting the significant suffering endured by civilians during such turmoil. Pope Leo XIV remarked, “Unfortunately, the winds of war are blowing once again in the Middle East, in Ukraine, and in many other parts of the world, sowing violence, terror and death, and once again affecting many innocent people.”
The Pope’s message also touched on the war in Ukraine, which has seen increased assaults in major cities. He encouraged people not to succumb to despair, urging instead for renewed dialogue and negotiation. “Let us not allow these winds to extinguish the flame of hope and peace,” he stated, reinforcing the importance of seeking a just resolution that ensures reconciliation and mutual respect among nations.
On Sea Sunday, which emphasizes the significance of the maritime industry, Pope Leo XIV extended his thoughts to seafarers and port workers facing harsh realities due to ongoing military tensions. “Today is Sea Sunday. My thoughts go out to all sailors, fishermen and port workers around the world who, though marked by separation from their loved ones and sometimes by fear of the conflicts occurring on the seas, sustain trade and the lives of many peoples through their patient and quiet labor,” he said.
In conclusion, the Pope reflected on Poland’s traditional Marian pilgrimage to Częstochowa, encouraging the faithful participating in the event. He prayed for the Polish pilgrims, invoking their role as “missionary disciples” spreading the Gospel. This pilgrimage is a historic event where thousands journey to pay homage to the revered icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa at the Shrine of the Monastery of Jasna Góra.
