45th Anniversary of John Paul II's Attack Remembered

The Catholic Church marked the 45th anniversary of the attack on Pope John Paul II during a General Audience held in St Peter's Square. This significant event in the Church's history remains associated with themes of prayer, forgiveness, and trust in God, as expressed by the Pope and his successors.

The attack on May 13, 1981, occurred amidst heightened tensions in a world grappling with the Cold War and socio-political strife, particularly concerning the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the rise of independent movements like Solidarność in Poland. In Italy, the years marked by political violence known as the Anni di Piombo had left the nation in turmoil. On that fateful day, a large crowd of pilgrims gathered in St Peter's Square for the weekly General Audience, where Pope John Paul II was greeting the faithful from his jeep. Suddenly, shots rang out, seriously injuring the Pope.

Following the shooting, Vatican Radio journalist Benedetto Nardacci conveyed the unsettling atmosphere as people waited in silence for updates on the Pope’s condition. The Holy See Press Office later announced that the Pope had sustained abdominal injuries and had undergone surgery at Gemelli Hospital. Though his condition was serious, there were “founded hopes for recovery.”

Four days after the attack, the Pope addressed the public from his hospital bed during the Regina Caeli message, expressing forgiveness towards his assailant, Mehmet Ali Ağca, and affirming his prayers for him. This moment exemplified John Paul II's lifelong devotion to Christian forgiveness and mercy, as he often attributed his survival to the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, a theme that resonated throughout his pontificate.

The late Pope’s legacy was honored during his funeral Mass on April 8, 2005, where Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger reflected on John Paul II’s unwavering faith amid suffering. He evoked themes from John Paul II's writings, emphasizing the transformative power of suffering through love. Pope Francis also acknowledged the significance of the attack during his General Audience on May 12, 2021, noting that it served as a reminder of humanity's reliance on God.

The resonance of John Paul II’s memory continues to be felt within the Church. On May 11, 2025, Pope Leo XIV echoed words familiar to John Paul II’s ministry, encouraging young people to accept the Church’s invitation without fear. Additionally, on May 18, 2025, Pope Leo XIV presided over a Mass commemorating the anniversary of Karol Wojtyła’s birth, further solidifying the enduring legacy of his predecessor.
