In Italy, the years marked by political violence known as the Anni di Piombo had left the nation in turmoil. On that fateful day, a large crowd of pilgrims gathered in St Peter's Square for the weekly General Audience, where Pope John Paul II was greeting the faithful from his jeep. Suddenly, shots rang out, seriously injuring the Pope.
Following the shooting, Vatican Radio journalist Benedetto Nardacci conveyed the unsettling atmosphere as people waited in silence for updates on the Pope’s condition. The Holy See Press Office later announced that the Pope had sustained abdominal injuries and had undergone surgery at Gemelli Hospital. Though his condition was serious, there were “founded hopes for recovery.”
Four days after the attack, the Pope addressed the public from his hospital bed during the Regina Caeli message, expressing forgiveness towards his assailant, Mehmet Ali Ağca, and affirming his prayers for him.
